Chapter 1 Did You Never Really Love Me?

Outside the window rumbled thunder, with heavy rain pouring down.
The room had an intimate but subdued atmosphere.
Yanis Thompson looked at the man pressing her against the bed, asking in a hoarse voice, "Zane..."
The man's voice was clear and cold as he said, "What's wrong?"
Yanis felt even the air is hot. With a flushed face, she couldn't help but frown.
"Did you never really love me?"
Hearing this, the man stared at her scarlet face with his deep eyes. "Yanis, do you think it's a buzzkill to ask this?"
Before Yanis could say something, the man got up and left.
He stood in the doorway, looking at Yanis somewhat condescendingly. "I was thinking we could spend the last night in peace, but it seems you don't want."
Such harsh words cast a pall of doom over Yanis.
Instead of being horny, she was almost killed inside.
Zane Lawrence bent down to pick up the clothes he had just tossed aside before giving Yanis another look. "In that case, I should go, and I'll ask Albi to bring the papers for you to sign tomorrow."
Without any hesitation, Zane walked out, before Yanis could say anything.
The door slammed shut, which pushed Yanis into despair.
As expected, she could never win Zane's heart.
Zane's first love was an actress called Neve Bennett, and he loved her very much. However, on the way to the set, Neve's car, due to the slippery road, drove into the railing and tumbled into the deepest sea in Manches City. Neve was severely injured, so her family took her abroad for further treatment.
The Lawrences didn't think Neve was good enough for Zane. Thus, after Neve was taken abroad, they kept setting up blind dates for Zane. In order to stop those blind dates, Zane got to Yanis.
Yanis and Zane were classmates in middle school. They were not friends, but Zane spoke to her more than others.
Yanis had had a crush on Zane since middle school, and she always dreamed of marrying him and becoming his wife.
Hence, when Zane got to Yanis, she agreed without any hesitation.
Yanis knew that Zane loved Neve and that he wouldn't forget Neve.
Nonetheless, Yanis still chose to marry him.
The Thompsons family was far worse than the Lawrence family, and the Thompsons knew clearly what Yanis would suffer if she married into the Lawrence family. Therefore. they did not agree with Yanis' decision.
Nevertheless, back then, Yanis was so obsessed that she even cut ties with the Thompson family to marry Zane.
As a result, Yanis, who used to be a noble young lady, became a housewife who had to do the laundry, cook, and take care of her husband.
In Yanis' mind, with her great attention to Zane, he would finally get touched and fall in love with her.
Unfortunately, five years passed. Zane was always cold to her, let alone fall in love with her.
And now, Neve was back, so it was time for Yanis to leave.
Yanis was also tired of being Mrs. Lawrence.
     It rained all night long.
Only when it was nearing dawn did it stop.
Yanis had a sleepless night. Her eyes were slightly swollen, and the ends of her eyes were bloodshot.
The phone on the bedside table rang.
It was Albi, Zane's all-round assistant.
Yanis reached for the phone and answered it, "Hello?"
It was only when Yanis said that she realized how hoarse her voice was.
Albi, who was on the other end of the phone, was scared.
After a few seconds of silence, Albi said in an expressionless tone, "Mrs. Lawrence, are you available this morning?"
Yanis sat up, staring somewhere away for a moment, and then answered, "Yes."
After that, Yanis paused and asked, "Zane asked you to do the papers, right?"
     Albi replied, "Yes."
Yanis knew exactly what Albi wanted to say.
She spent five years trying to win Zane's heart, but in vain.
     Thus, she gave up.
Yanis lifted the covers and got out of bed, whispering, "Albi, please tell Zane that I'll be waiting for him at the coffee shop across from your company in an hour."
Albi hesitated for a moment and said, "Okay. I'll tell Mr. Lawrence about it."
Yanis hung up the phone without saying anything else.
     ...
An hour later, Yanis pulled up in front of the cafe across from the Lawrence Group's building.
She was about to turn off the engine and get out of the car when her phone rang.
The call came from her good friend, Bonnie Cooke.
"Yanis, don't forget about the award ceremony today."
     Yanis answered, "I see."
"What's wrong with your voice? Did you get a cold?" Bonnie asked in a concerned voice.
Yanis cleared her throat. "I drank too much cold last night, and with the air conditioning, I had a sore throat."
"Did you ask Zane to take care of you?"
     "He's too busy."
     Bonnie grunted. "He'll be spoiled."
Yanis turned off the engine and said, "You..."
Before Yanis could finish her words, she saw Zane and Neve walking out of the dessert store across the street. Yanis felt her eyes start to hurt again.
     They were hot and sore.
"What's wrong with me?" Bonnie's voice came over the phone.
Yanis said, "Nothing. I have some things to do now. See you."
"Don't forget about the award ceremony," Bonnie repeated.
Yanis didn't answer but hung up the phone.
Zane was handsome and Neve was beautiful, so they were both attractive when standing together.
Looking at them, Yanis sneered, wondering why she used to try to replace Neve's place in Zane's heart.
When Zane looked over, Yanis didn't avoid it. Instead, she pushed the door open and got out of the car.
Yanis graciously walked up to Zane and Neve, looked at Zane, and asked, "I can leave if you are not available and want another appointment."
Zane looked Yanis in the eye and said, "No."
After saying that, he looked sideways at Neve and said in a soft voice, "I'll walk you to the car first. I have something to do."
Neve looked over at Yanis with a smile on her face. "You are Miss Thompson, right?"
Hearing Neve's words, Yanis offered her hand. "Yes. Nice to meet you, Miss Bennett."
As Neve reached out to shake hands with Yanis, Zane suddenly grabbed Neve's wrist. "It's too windy here. You'd better get into the car."
Neve smiled sweetly. "Zane, I'm not that delicate."
Zane tucked at Neve's clothes. "I'm worried about you, so just get into the car with me."
